 ANSI/IIAR CO2-2021 Safety Standard for Closed-Circuit Carbon Dioxide Refrigeration Systems

As the phase-down of F-gas refrigerants continues to accelerate worldwide, CO2 technology has become an increasingly popular option utilized in the industrial refrigeration sector. The IIAR, in it's continuing mission to promote the safe and sustainable use of natural refrigerants, has produced a new ANSI approved standard specifying minimum requirements for the safe design, safe installation, startup, and inspection, testing, and maintenance (ITM) of closed-circuit carbon dioxide refrigeration systems and any modifications or additions to an existing system.

For the purpose of this standard, it is assumed that the carbon dioxide refrigeration system and the modifications or additions to an existing system have been designed for the duty that it is to perform, that all piping and electrical equipment has been installed, and that adequate connections for the startup and test instruments have been provided. IIAR standards represent industry consensus and are subject to a rigorous public review process.

ANSI/IIAR 2-2021 American National Standard for Design of Safe Closed-Circuit Ammonia Refrigeration Systems
ANSI/IIAR 2-2021 is a standard for the design of safe closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems.  It incorporates topics traditionally addressed in other codes and standards making it the single most comprehensive standard covering the safe design of closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems published to date. 

Some of the changes to this edition include: 
Clarification that existing facilities comply with IIAR 9; New definitions have been added; Requirements for eyewash/safety showers have been re-organized and clarified; Ammonia detection requirements have been changed; Changes to machinery room exhaust and ventilation have been updated based on new requirements; New requirements for Evaporators are included concerning design for freeze protection and design for frozen products; Inclusion of emergency pressure control systems where required by AHJs; New appendices include O. (Informative) Designing to Avoid Component Failure Caused by Abnormal Pressure or Shock, P.(Informative) Removal of Water from a Refrigeration System , and Q. (Informative) Guidelines for the Identification of Ammonia Refrigeration Piping and System Components.

ANSI/IIAR Standard 3-2022 American National Standard for Ammonia Refrigeration Valves  
ANSI/IIAR Standard 3-2022 specifies criteria for materials, design parameters, marking and testing of valves and strainers used in closed circuit ammonia refrigeration systems. This standard is not intended to supplant existing safety codes. In cases where the authority with jurisdiction has special requirements that are more stringent than those in the standard, that authority shall prevail.

ANSI/IIAR Standard 5-2019 American National Standard for the Startup of Closed-Circuit Ammonia Refrigeration Systems
ANSI/IIAR 5 specifies criteria and procedures of the startup and commissioning of closed-circuit ammonia mechanical refrigeration systems. It provides basic minimum requirements for the safe start-up and commissioning of completed closed-circuit mechanical refrigerating systems utilizing ammonia as the refrigerant and additions and modifications made to such systems.

ANSI/IIAR 5-2019 was reaffirmed and approved by ANSI September 9th, 2019 which supersedes ANSI/IIAR 5-2013

Informative Appendix A was added to provide explanatory information related to provisions in the standard. Sections of the standard with associated explanatory information are marked as an asterisk “*” after the section number, and the associated appendix information is located in Appendix A with a corresponding section number preceded by “A”.

ANSI/IIAR Standard 6-2019 American National Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Closed-Circuit Ammonia Refrigeration Systems
IIAR 6 establishes the minimum requirements for inspection, testing, and maintenance (ITM) applicable to safe closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration system. It is meant to aid in identifying what components should be inspected, tested, and maintained and how frequently these tasks should be performed.  This standard is intended to be incorporated as part of a Mechanical Integrity (MI) Program as recognized and generally accepted good engineering practices (RAGAGEP).  It can be used to perform a gap analysis for minimum safe requirements of an owner’s existing ITM tasks as well as provide the minimum requirements for ITM record keeping responsibilities.
